Finasteride, known generically as Propecia, is an oral medication valued for its efficacy in treating male pattern baldness. It belongs to the family of medications known as 5-alpha-reductase inhibitors.
umerous studies were done to develop Finasteride. During the early 1990s, pharmaceutical company Versatie created a generic version of Finasteride, which was subsequently marketed under the brand name Proscar. Subsequently, the brand was commercially available and marketed under the name Propecia.
Finasteride is a 5-alpha-reductase inhibitor. It works by inhibiting the enzyme converting testosterone into dihydrotestosterone (DHT), a hormone implicated in male pattern baldness. DHT is a primary contributor to hair loss, but it can also cause secondary effects such as sexual dysfunction and reduced scalp coverage. Byizarrely, Finasteride can cause secondary effects such as reduced scalp coverage and hair loss.
Finasteride functions by blocking the action of DHT on hair follicles. This conversion process is thought to involve a series of steps that result in DHT acting on follicles to shrink and eventually stop them from growing new hair. These follicles are then exposed to an elevated level of DHT by the hormone called dihydrotestosterone (DHT).
Finasteride's primary function is as an oral medication that effectively treats male pattern baldness by reducing hair loss on the scalp. The mechanism of action involves blocking the production of DHT by the testes and its subsequent growth in the bloodstream. Finasteride also helps to mitigate some of the side effects of DHT, such as decreased scalp coverage, sexual dysfunction and increased hair loss. It is important to note that Finasteride should not be used in women or children due to its potential to be harmful to the male fetus.
Despite the controversy surrounding Finasteride, concerns have been raised about its potential to cause fertility issues and possibly breast cancer. One concern is the possibility of rare instances where men may have difficulty conceiving due to difficulty achieving an erection or maintaining satisfactory sexual intercourse. Finasteride's potential to affect male sexual health has also been reported.
Finasteride is available in various dosages ranging from 5 mg to 20 mg. The dosage of Finasteride typically ranges from 1 mg to 5 mg. It is important to take Finasteride at a fixed time each day to maintain consistent levels in the body. Taking the medication at the same time each day helps maintain consistent levels of the medication in the bloodstream. It is crucial to follow the dosage instructions provided by a healthcare professional, as they will determine the most appropriate dose for each individual.
It is important to take Finasteride by mouth with a glass of water to achieve optimal absorption. It is recommended to swallow the tablet whole with water, and avoid crushing or breaking it. Taking the tablet with food may help to reduce stomach upset. It is essential to take Finasteride at the same time each day to maintain consistent levels in the body. It is also important to take Finasteride at the same time each day to avoid potential side effects.
The recommended dosage of Finasteride varies based on individual needs. The typical starting dose of Finasteride for male pattern baldness is 5 mg, taken at the same time each day. Depending on the severity of hair loss and how much hair loss is present, the dose may be increased to 20 mg. The dosage may be adjusted to the individual's needs based on efficacy, side effects, or the response to the medication.
Polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS) is a common endocrine disorder characterized by persistent androgenic (male) and/orrogenic (female) menstrual cycles [
]. The pathogenesis of PCOS involves an imbalance in the hormone levels and, in women, the estrogen receptor gene, which plays an important role in the control of the hormonal environment. As an important factor in hormone regulation, the presence of estrogen in the body is associated with a negative impact on the reproductive system, including decreased fertility and lower ovulation rates [
The purpose of this study was to investigate the levels of the hormone estrogen and its metabolites, testosterone, and luteinizing hormone (LH), in PCOS and their potential role in reproductive regulation in women.
A total of 539 consecutive women with PCOS treated for 5 years were recruited for this research.
The study was registered in the International Clinical Trials Registry for Human Research (ICHRT-HU) (No.adh.14-01-0226) (S13-01-0226-0) (the registered number: CHE-H-2018-0205). The study was conducted in accordance with Good Clinical Practice guidelines and the latest version of the Declaration of Helsinki [
The mean age of the study population was 46 years (SD = 15.8).
Mean levels of estrogen and testosterone in the control and study groups were significantly higher than those in the other three groups (p = 0.001 and p = 0.001, respectively).
Mean levels of luteinizing hormone, total luteinizing hormone, follicle stimulating hormone, and insulin were significantly lower in the control group than those in the study group (p = 0.049 and p = 0.031, respectively).
Luteinizing hormone levels were significantly lower in the study group than those in the control group (p = 0.002) and significantly lower in the study group compared to the control group (p = 0.003).
The aim of this study was to evaluate the levels of the hormones estrogen and testosterone in the PCOS patients treated with finasteride (Finasteride 1mg tablets) for 5 years. It was found that, while the levels of testosterone were lower in the study group (p = 0.039) compared to the control group (p = 0.032), the levels of estradiol and luteinizing hormone were significantly lower in the study group (p = 0.006 and p = 0.001, respectively).
In the present study, the total levels of estrogen and testosterone and the levels of luteinizing hormone and insulin were significantly lower in the study group than those in the control group. In other words, lower levels of testosterone was associated with a greater reduction in the levels of estradiol and luteinizing hormone in the study group.
The levels of estradiol and luteinizing hormone were significantly lower in the study group (p = 0.002 and p = 0.003, respectively) and significantly lower in the study group compared to the control group (p = 0.036).
The luteinizing hormone level of the study group (p = 0.004) was significantly lower compared to the control group (p = 0.006).
In addition, the total levels of testosterone (p < 0.05) and total luteinizing hormone (p < 0.05) were significantly lower in the study group (p = 0.005 and p = 0.005, respectively).
The mean levels of total estradiol and total luteinizing hormone were significantly lower in the study group than the control group (p = 0.007 and p = 0.004, respectively). The levels of luteinizing hormone were significantly lower in the study group (p = 0.004) and significantly lower in the study group compared to the control group (p = 0.006).
In the present study, the mean total estradiol levels were significantly lower in the study group than the control group (p = 0.006).
The levels of estradiol and testosterone were significantly lower in the study group than the control group (p = 0.

Finasteride is the 5α-reductase inhibitor which blocks the enzyme 5-alpha reductase and has a better side effect profile compared to generic Propecia, said Guy himself.
Guy added: “It’s a very effective treatment, and I’m really glad to see it going generic so men can benefit from its continued relevance.”
The first brand to go generic is Proscar, written for men between the ages of 18 and 41 but has now been approved by the FDA for continued use in men over the age of 40.
Originally developed to treat enlarged prostates, it was later found to be effective in adult men with an enlarged prostate and a slightly reduced hair loss.
It works by inhibiting the 5-alpha reductase enzyme and it is used in the treatment of benign prostatic hyperplasia and in male pattern hair loss.
It is not for everyone and in some cases it may be used alongside an alpha-blocker for hair loss.
This version of Propecia, which is due to be launched in the UK in February, contains the same active ingredient and is the same drug which is used in Proscar.
Finasteride, which is also available as a generic, is used in the treatment of type II diabetes.
In the Prince of Wales, it is used to regrow lost muscle mass and to give life to the wordline of hair growth.
The head-to-toe product is still the most cost-effective, but works by allowing more hair to grow by reducing the volume of semen released during sexual stimulation, the Prince of Wales added. It is also used in men with male pattern baldness to treat benign prostatic hyperplasia and to reduce hair loss associated with androgenetic alopecia, the Prince of Wales said.
“The 5-alpha reductase inhibitor finasteride has been an outstanding treatment for men”, he added as he handed over the brand name for the treatment.
The 5α-reductase inhibitor finasteride, which works by blocking the enzyme 5-alpha reductase, is still the most effective, but can also have a negative side effect profile, said Dr Laura Bowker of the Royal College of Pharmacology, that includes sexual dysfunction.
This means that men who take finasteride may notice an increase in hair loss which is believed to be related to the reduction in semen volume.
The treatment is not recommended for use in women and is not recommended for use in men with liver problems.
The first version of Propecia, which is to be sold in the UK next month, contains the same active ingredient and is the same drug which is used in Proscar.
